The plates come in three sizes:
20 cm, 23 cm and 27 cm diameter (8″, 9″ & 10½”)
I also have a few other sizes of plates and bowls – you can ring or email me for more information.
The plates are glazed with a tin glaze.
The design and writing is then drawn on gently with a soft pencil, and then painted with a mixture of oxides and underglaze colours.
They are then fired in the kiln to 1060°C.
This process is sometimes referred to as Majolica. It is a traditional method dating back hundreds of years with its origin in Persia. It is the same method used for the production of Delftware in Holland and in Britain.
The result is an off-white background with beautiful rich colours.
Influenced by traditional commemorative plates, I add a touch of the contemporary in my style and subject matter.
Small, Medium and Large blank plates
All the plates are hand painted by me, Carlo Briscoe.
Graduating with a Fine Art degree in 1983, I then worked as an illustrator for several years.
I set up Reptile Tiles & Ceramics with my husband, Ed Dunn, in 1988.
As well as painting tiles I have always painted wedding plates, birthday plates and thank you plates.
Our work has been featured in numerous books, magazines and television programmes, and we have sent commissions all over the world.
Our work has also been sold in shops and galleries worldwide, including Liberty and Harvey Nichols.
Our hand painted tiles can be viewed on a separate website: www.reptiletiles.co.uk
